Field Control Station

FCS

The Field Control Station (FCS) is the processing and control element of a distributed control system architecture; it receives input and output signals and executes the control loops.

Distributed Control System

DCS

Distributed Control System for control and monitoring of large process units, comprising controllers, operator stations and the communication network, integrated with safety systems and package units.

Emergency Shutdown System

ESD

The Emergency Shutdown (ESD) system brings the unit to a safe state under hazardous conditions. Design is based on the required safety integrity level using safety controllers; the HIPPS system for overpressure protection also falls within this group.

Notes on control systems

PLC or DCS?

A PLC is common for controlling a package or a smaller unit. A DCS is used for large units with many control loops and a need for extensive integration. In many projects, the package PLC is connected to the unit DCS.

Why is the ESD separate from the DCS?

The control system runs the process under normal conditions, while the safety system is designed solely to bring the unit to a safe state. Keeping the two separate ensures that a fault or change in the control system does not disable the protective function.
